Heavy Rigid (HR) Truck Licence

Next up, the HR truck licence. While you might not need it on day one, having (or working on getting) this licence is a huge plus. It allows you to drive the heavy vehicles that keep drilling operations moving. Plus, upgrading to an HR licence is a must if you’re aiming for bigger roles down the line.

National Police Clearance (Within 3 Months)

A recent National Police Clearance is essential. It’s all about ensuring trust and safety on-site. Employers need to know that you’re a reliable team player, especially when working in tight-knit crews handling critical tasks.

Pre-Employment Medicals

Before you join the team, you’ll need to pass a drug and alcohol screening along with pre-employment medicals. These tests confirm that you’re fit for the physically demanding work and that you’re ready to maintain a safe, productive work environment.

Want to stand out? A Working at Heights ticket can do just that. Drilling isn’t just ground-level work—sometimes, you’ll be up high, and this ticket shows that you’re trained and ready to handle it safely.

This is a common question for those looking to start their career in the mines, and an important one.

A Heavy Rigid (HR) vehicle licence allows you to drive heavy vehicles with three or more axles and a gross vehicle mass greater than 8,000 kg, and tow a trailer with a maximum GVM of 9,000 kg.

Within the context of mining, the HR-Licence allows staff to operate heavy-duty trucks and vehicles that are found across mine sites. So if you’re planning on launching a long-term surface drilling career, you will need to upgrade your licence sooner than later.

“What’s the Difference between HR-A and HR-B?”

The main difference between an HR-A and an HR-B is the type of gearbox you’re licenced to use. With an HR-A licence, you can operate a heavy vehicle with an automatic gearbox. In contrast, with an HR-B licence, you can operate a heavy vehicle with either an automatic or synchromesh gearbox.

Different companies utilise a variety of types of heavy rigid gearboxes, which is why various sites require either HR-A or HR-B.

“How do I upgrade my Licence to HR?”

A Heavy Rigid (HR) vehicle licence can only be upgraded from an unrestricted manual C class licence, which has been held for at least 2 years. To upgrade your licence, you will have to complete and pass a full training course and assessment, which can cost upwards of $900!

Do I need a manual licence?

We get this question more than you would expect, but the answer for our team and clients is always “yes.”

If you’re going out to site, 9 times out of 10, you will need to be able to operate a vehicle with a manual transmission. So, from a convenience and safety point of view, everyone on site must be able and legally licenced to drive the car/truck in the case of an emergency. These trucks aren’t just being driven on dirt tracks but active roads, so it is a requirement that anyone driving the vehicle is adequately licenced and trained.

Additionally, the Heavy Rigid (HR) vehicle licence can only be upgraded from an unrestricted manual C-class licence when it is at least two years old and no longer provisional. 

So, for True Resources, it is a mandatory requirement for staff to have a manual driver’s licence before heading out to the site.
