So, you’ve decided to dive into the world of fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) work in Australia. Congratulations! Entering this dynamic industry can be a game-changer for your career. Still, like any venture, it requires careful planning and execution.

Here’s your guide on how to launch your FIFO career!

1. Research and Specialise
Before applying for positions, spend some time researching the different sectors within the FIFO industry. Whether it’s mining, oil, or gas, understanding the nuances of each sector will help you tailor your approach. Identify the skills, certificates or qualifications required for your chosen field and work on acquiring them. Specialising in a particular aspect of FIFO work can make you a more attractive candidate.

2. Craft a Standout CV
Your CV is your ticket to an interview, so make it count. Highlight relevant skills, experiences, and qualifications that align with the demands of FIFO work. Emphasise any transferable skills that showcase your adaptability and problem-solving abilities. Be sure to include any safety certifications or training you’ve completed, as safety is paramount in the FIFO industry.

Unsure how to get started with your CV? We can help! Check out our CV Revamping Service.

3. Network Strategically
Building a network in the FIFO world can open doors to opportunities you might not find through traditional job postings. Attend industry events, join online forums, and connect with professionals in your chosen sector. Networking not only enhances your job search but also provides valuable insights into the industry’s current trends and expectations. There are plenty of FIFO Facebook Groups that offer great support for those starting out in the sector or have questions.

4. Gain Experience and Certifications
FIFO employers value hands-on experience and relevant certifications. Consider gaining experience in related industries or roles to boost your candidacy. Certifications in safety, first aid, or industry-specific skills can make you a more competitive candidate. Many employers prioritise candidates with a proven commitment to safety and continuous learning.

5. Be Flexible and Adaptable
Flexibility and adaptability are key attributes in the FIFO world. Be open to different rosters, locations, and job responsibilities. Demonstrating your ability to thrive in diverse and challenging environments will make you a sought-after candidate. Highlight instances in your career where you’ve successfully adapted to change and overcome challenges.

6. Apply Strategically
Once you’ve done your research, polished your CV, and built a network, it’s time to start applying. Tailor your applications to each position, emphasising how your experiences translates and aligns with the requirements of this new position. Keep an eye on industry job boards, company websites, and recruitment agencies for the latest opportunities.

7. Ace the Interview
If you secure an interview, congratulations! Prepare for the interview by researching the company, understanding the industry, and rehearsing responses to common FIFO-related questions. Showcase your enthusiasm for the industry and your commitment to safety and continuous improvement. Also, keep in mind presentation matters, even though you’ll be in high-vis on site, we still recommend cleaning up for your interview.

—

Breaking into the FIFO world requires a combination of knowledge, skills, and strategic planning. By following these steps, you’ll increase your chances of not just opening the door but stepping confidently into the exciting and rewarding world of FIFO work in Australia. Good luck on your journey!

What is a Heavy Rigid Licence?

This is a common question for those looking to start their career in the mines, and an important one.

A Heavy Rigid (HR) vehicle licence allows you to drive heavy vehicles with three or more axles and a gross vehicle mass greater than 8,000 kg, and tow a trailer with a maximum GVM of 9,000 kg.

Within the context of mining, the HR-Licence allows staff to operate heavy-duty trucks and vehicles that are found across mine sites. So if you’re planning on launching a long-term surface drilling career, you will need to upgrade your licence sooner than later.

“What’s the Difference between HR-A and HR-B?”

The main difference between an HR-A and an HR-B is the type of gearbox you’re licenced to use. With an HR-A licence, you can operate a heavy vehicle with an automatic gearbox. In contrast, with an HR-B licence, you can operate a heavy vehicle with either an automatic or synchromesh gearbox.

Different companies utilise a variety of types of heavy rigid gearboxes, which is why various sites require either HR-A or HR-B.

“How do I upgrade my Licence to HR?”

A Heavy Rigid (HR) vehicle licence can only be upgraded from an unrestricted manual C class licence, which has been held for at least 2 years. To upgrade your licence, you will have to complete and pass a full training course and assessment, which can cost upwards of $900!

That is where we can help…

Did you know True Resources organises the training and covers the cost of HR-Licence upgrades during our onboarding process for successful Offsider candidates? Reach out to our team to get started.

We get this question more than you would expect, but the answer for our team and clients is always “yes.”

If you’re going out to site, 9 times out of 10, you will need to be able to operate a vehicle with a manual transmission. So, from a convenience and safety point of view, everyone on site must be able and legally licenced to drive the car/truck in the case of an emergency. These trucks aren’t just being driven on dirt tracks but active roads, so it is a requirement that anyone driving the vehicle is adequately licenced and trained.

Additionally, the Heavy Rigid (HR) vehicle licence can only be upgraded from an unrestricted manual C-class licence when it is at least two years old and no longer provisional.

So, for True Resources, it is a mandatory requirement for staff to have a manual driver’s licence before heading out to the site.

Have any questions about how to get your foot in the door? Send them through to our friendly team!

A fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) job is a unique experience that requires a different kind of preparation than a typical 9-to-5 job. Whether you’re working in the oil, gas, or mining industries, there are some essential steps to take before you begin your FIFO journey. Here’s a guide to help you get ready for your first FIFO job.

Consider What to Pack

Before packing for your trip, consider the type of work you will be doing and the climate at your destination. It is generally best to pack light but include everything necessary for the long days ahead. Check with your employer about what items are allowed and what should be left behind when packing. Additionally, research any safety measures that may be necessary for specific sites so that you can come prepared with the appropriate gear. If you’re heading to an active Australian mine site, the weather can vary from incredibly hot during the day to very cold at night, so ensure you are prepared for both extremes.

Plan Your Finances

When starting a FIFO job, it is important to plan out how much money you need each month—including saving up extra funds in case of an emergency—and how much money will come in from your new role. This includes ensuring that all expenses are accounted for, such as travel costs, food expenses on site, and housing costs associated with living away from home. Keep in mind most FIFO mining roles cover the cost of travel, food and on-site accommodation.

Organise Your Life at Home

When taking on a FIFO job it is essential to remember that despite how short or long the assignment will be, there still needs to be an organised life waiting back at home. Making sure bills are paid on time and organising paperwork are just two examples of tasks that can easily slip through the cracks if not correctly managed while away from home. To help combat this issue, try setting up automatic payments or having someone else handle the paperwork while abroad instead of attempting too many logistical tasks on your own while on-site.

Working FIFO jobs can provide great opportunities but require special considerations such as packing properly for weather and safety purposes, managing finances effectively, and staying organised at home while away on assignments.

–

Thinking about trying out the FIFO life? Get in touch with our team to learn more about our current opportunities or check out our vacancies page.

Working a Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) job can be an excellent opportunity to make extra money while taking advantage of unique experiences. However, FIFO work comes with its own unique challenges. Long hours away from family and friends, lack of access to health professionals, and constant travel can all affect your mental health. Here are some tips on preserving your mental health while working FIFO.

Prioritise Self Care
Self-care is an integral part of protecting your mental health. Make sure you take time for yourself during your break or after your shift, whether reading a book, going for a walk, or simply taking some time to relax. It’s also essential to develop healthy sleep habits when travelling frequently and working long hours. Make sure you get at least seven hours of sleep per night and avoid using caffeine before bedtime if possible. Finally, make sure you eat healthy meals throughout the day—being away from home doesn’t mean you should skip meals!

Maintain Healthy Relationships
When working FIFO, staying connected with your friends and family back home can be difficult. That’s why it’s essential to prioritise maintaining healthy relationships even when apart. Try setting up weekly video calls with loved ones or scheduling regular texts or emails so that you stay connected despite the distance between you. Additionally, try meeting new people while on-site to foster another community.

Seek Help You Need It
If your mental health is suffering despite these efforts, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Many employers offer counselling services specifically tailored for employees who work FIFO jobs (including us!), and many online resources are available. Don’t hesitate to seek professional support if needed—your mental health is just as important as your physical health!

Working a fly-in-fly-out job has its perks, but it can also be taxing on your mental health if not managed properly. By prioritising self-care, maintaining relationships back home, and seeking help when needed, job seekers can ensure they keep their mental well-being in check while working FIFO jobs! Overall, being mindful of how best to preserve your mental health will guarantee success in this work environment!

—-

If you’re struggling, please ask a loved one for help, or call Lifeline on 13 11 14. Lifeline also provides online counselling at www.lifeline.org.au
